A Quiet World

I woke up just like any other day. I brushed my teeth, combed my hair, and headed off to school. When I arrived, I began walking up the stairs, but it felt a little strange because I didn’t hear any voices like usual. I brushed it off, thinking people just chose not to talk so early in the morning.

I waited for the bell to ring, but I still hadn’t heard a single voice. At this point, I was getting a little creeped out, but once again, I brushed it off. “Maybe the class is just really quiet today…” I mumbled to myself.

I turned around to grab my school books from my backpack, and to my surprise, there were a bunch of people in the classroom, all speaking—yet I couldn’t hear anything. I could barely make out what they were saying since I couldn’t read lips. I stared for a few seconds, then pinched myself because I was convinced this was a dream.

When the class settled down and the teacher came in, the teacher started telling us something—most likely an announcement… yet I couldn’t hear anything! I started panicking. Then, I heard a small sound from outside. I thought I was deaf, but I could hear a bird chirping. I was really confused. Then I heard a dog barking outside.

I waited for the class to be dismissed, staying as quiet as a mouse and hoping no one would start a conversation with me. I headed to the garden… and there it was. I could hear rabbits making small squeaking noises—but not the countless children playing and screaming outside.

I sneaked out of the school and never looked back.
