Can really a book change its reader’s perspective on a topic? I think so yes, but not every book. It is a bit about the reader’s intellectuality and also the author’s purpose while writing the book. It can be about its genre too. As you can see, many factors can influence this situation. But what is the main factor that changes the reader’s perspective on life?
Books may have been written for many purposes. Sometimes the author wants to entertain us. Comic books are a great example of this, or a fairytale. But do you really think those will change the reader’s opinion. I don’t really think so. It’s because of there is no purpose except entertaining the reader. I know, comic books or fantasy books might have other reasons for being written besides just entertaining the reader but mainly the purpose is to entertain. So which type of books can really touch the reader’s life? Essays, critical writings, novels, and similar types of books can offer the reader many benefits. Essays are texts where someone shares their feelings, thoughts, and ideas about a topic in a simple and honest way, without making final decisions. Through writing essays, the author can provide the reader with different perspectives. Critical writings can change the reader’s perspective too. Critical writings are meant to discuss the positive and negative sides of a work or a situation. This helps the reader notice details they might have missed and become aware of certain points. And also novels can do the same thing by telling the reader a touching story taken from the reader’s daily life.
What about the reader? I think reader is the main point here. Because if the reader doesn’t have enough knowledge or can’t understand the main idea of the text, no matter how good the book is, it won’t mean anything to the reader. At the same time, the reader might be too biased about some topics and insist on not changing their opinions no matter what. There isn’t much that can be done about this.
