The Crime

The rain wouldn’t stop. I was soaked, freezing, and running as fast as I could. In my hands was a folder, the one that could save my brother. It had proof that he didn’t do what they said. But court started in six minutes. I had to make it. I was racing against time, and just when I wished for a miracle to happen

A taxi pulled up fast, right in front of me. The window rolled down.

“Need a ride?” It was Raj, our old neighbour. He used to drive us to school years ago. “Raj’’

“Get in” I jumped in without thinking.

“How did you even see me” He smiled. “Just had a feeling. Drove past your house and saw you running.”

The ride was wild. He ran red lights, dodged traffic, didn’t slow down. I just held the folder tight and hoped we’d make it. We got to the courthouse with seconds to spare. I ran inside, past the security, and straight into the courtroom.

“Wait!” I yelled, holding up the folder.

Everything stopped. The judge looked up. The lawyers stared. They checked the papers. The truth came out. My brother didn’t belong in jail and they let him go. Outside, the rain was still falling, but everything felt lighter.

“You saved me,” my brother said.

I laughed. “No. Raj did.”

He grinned. “Gues miracles drive taxis now.”

  1. “Yeah,” I said. “And they show up right when you need them.”

A month later we had my funeral, it was my brother who committed the crime. And that’s when I knew to not trust anyone especially the ones who are the closest to you.
