Today, many young people use social media every day. They use apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat to talk with friends, share photos, and watch videos. Social media can be fun and interesting. But using it too much can be bad for mental health.
When young people spend too much time on social media, they often compare their lives to others. They see perfect photos and happy faces online. This can make them feel sad, lonely, or not good enough. But most of these photos are not real. Many people only show the best parts of their lives.
Also, some young people feel stress when they don’t get many likes or comments. They may think, “Why don’t people like me?” This can make them feel worried or unhappy. Social media can also take too much time. Some students don’t sleep well or don’t study because they are always online.
How Can We Find Digital Balance? It is important to use social media in a healthy way. Young people can: Set a time limit for social media use, maybe 1–2 hours per day, take breaks and do other things, like going outside or reading a booktalk to someone when they feel bad or stressed, remember that life online is not always real
Parents and teachers should talk to young people about healthy internet use. Schools can teach digital skills and mental health. Social media companies should also help by showing break reminders and stopping harmful content.
Social media is a part of life now. But we must use it wisely. With balance, we can enjoy social media and protect our mental health.
