Okay, so I woke up this morning, and I could literally hear what people were thinking.
It felt so unreal! I thought I was still asleep or something. It became super clear at breakfast. My brother kept staring at me, and I heard him think, “Did she grab the last pancake?” But he didn’t say a word.
I got on the bus feeling like I was losing my mind. Then it happened again — a girl on the other side of the bus was stressing about her first class. I mean, I get it, though.
Then my friend Sam looked happy, but inside his head? He was actually freaking out: “I totally failed that history test. My dad will be so mad. Why doesn’t anybody understand?” He was just sitting there, stressing and sweating over it.
I couldn’t let him sit there like that. I knew I had to do something. I moved over, tried to act casual, and said, “That history test was hard, right? I don’t think I did well at all. Want to study together next time? We can stop each other from failing—or just eat snacks.”
He looked at me a little strangely, but then I saw relief on his face. His thoughts calmed down, and he thought, “Oh, that would be great!”
Did I need to read his mind to help him? Not really. But I’m not complaining. I guess it’s nice to read minds—especially if it helps my friends out.
