Sleep is an active state of unconsciousness produced by the body where the brain is in a relative state of rest and is reactive primarily to internal stimuli (Brinkman et al., 2023). It is without doubt one of the most essential elements to sustain one’s life alongside nutrition and hydration. In other words, sleep is one of the most crucial needs a human body possesses.
The quality of one’s sleep can directly affect their day, human relations and performance. This is why especially students, who still have growing and developing bodies, should get a good quality out of their well-needed resting periods.
Although scientists’ opinions on the quantity of sleep hours may vary, it is widely accepted that quality is over quantity since every human has a different body with distinct needs and capabilities. A good night’s sleep is proven to increase academic performance and helps students to comprehend more of the information presented in the classroom.
Many students, especially those in higher grades, tend to get less sleep than they actually need the night before an exam. This is because exam stress and the time to understand hard topics overcome their need for sleep. When they don’t get enough sleep, they don’t get good enough results. And even if they do get high grades, this method is not just unsustainable but also will cause the student to burn out in the long run.
The solution to this problem lies in better time management. It is essential that exam study should be separated into at least three days and not just the night before, especially if it is an extra important exam, while more than that is always preferred. Knowing how to manage study time not only contributes to students’ exam performance and reduces their stress, but also increases their sleep quality and quantity.
In conclusion, sleep is just as important for a student’s body as food and water. While it might seem necessary to stay up late to study, sleeping less actually makes it harder to succeed. This can be eliminated by managing time better and studying over several days instead of just one night. This way, students can get the rest they need to perform their best in class and in exams.
