How Free Are Our Decisions?

We make tons of decisions in our daily lives. Some of them are based on our needs, while others are shaped by the rules set by society or laws. However, the important question is: how many of our decisions are actually based on our needs and wants? In my opinion, this topic is like a big mountain full of questions, but let’s take a closer look.

The first thing I want to talk about is the decisions we make because of rules. For example, in our country, there is an 8,700 TL fine for throwing ash or trash on the ground. Of course, there are different conditions and penalties depending on the type of waste thrown, but this example shows how our actions are often shaped by rules and laws.

Now, let’s look at the decisions we make by our own choice, without being guided by laws or rules. To explain this in detail, we can consider the habit of eating while watching TV. Many people choose to watch TV while eating, which is a decision we make on our own, without being guided by laws or general rules, especially when we are alone.

However, if we are under 18 and not considered adults, we are usually subject to many different rules set by our parents or by the law. In short, we face rules at every age and in every part of the world. Sometimes we are forced to follow them because of laws, and sometimes we make decisions independently, without being influenced by external factors.
