In our English class, we had a discussion about whether exchange programs for students are really worth the time and money. Some students believed that the only way to really learn a language and understand a culture is to spend a term abroad. Others believed that it is too costly and that students can learn just as much from books, videos, and the internet.
There is some merit to both sides. When you live in another country, you are forced to speak the language every day. You have to communicate with people in shops, at school, and with host families. This type of daily practice helps build confidence and helps you understand how people really speak. You also get to experience traditions, food, and social behaviors firsthand, which gives you a better understanding of the culture. Exchange programs can also be very costly, and not all families can afford them. Also, being away from home for such a long time can be difficult. With the advancement of technology today, there are many alternatives available, such as online courses and online conversations with native speakers.
In my opinion, while books and videos are helpful, they are not a substitute for going abroad they do not provide the same experience as living in a foreign country. If students have the opportunity, an exchange program can be an experience they will never forget.
