It was a night in a tent that felt hot in summer and cold in winter. There was a girl named Sophia. The next day, she would search for food and water, just like every other day. Finding them was always difficult, but Sophia usually managed to get enough.
She thought about where she should look the next morning, and after a while she fell asleep. She woke up at 6 a.m. because the sun gets very hot during the day, especially near the desert.
First, she checked the place where she usually found water, but she had used the last of it yesterday. When she arrived, she looked around and saw a small lake. She quickly filled the bottles. She felt very happy because the lake looked clean, and she hoped they could use it for years. Normally, Sophia and her family had to drink dirty water.
Then it was time to find food. On her way home, she saw her friends playing her favorite game. She wanted to join them, but she had work to do. She gave the water bottles to her mom and went to search for food with her dad.
They had a small farming area like the other families in the tent village. She picked some fruits and vegetables. Then they went hunting for a while before going home to cook dinner.
When her parents started cooking, Sophia went to school. There were only a few lessons left. She listened, but she was tired and a bit sick from drinking dirty water for months. During break time, she couldn’t play because she had no energy.
When she got home, she washed her hands with a little water and ate her dinner. After that, the whole village sat around a fire and talked about their day, their problems, and where they found water.
After about an hour, everyone went back to their tents and slept. This cycle repeats again and again in many poor places in Africa.
