An African kid: “I am hungry and it is not my fault”

Dear Diary

Today is the third day without any food. I am looking for something to eat for me and my family. It is very hard, because there are dangerous animals like lions and tigers around the place where we live.

I have a big family: my brothers, my sisters, my mom, my dad, my grandpa, my grandma and me. Three days ago, I found two coconuts and seven mangoes. We ate them, but we were still hungry.

Finding meat is almost impossible, because there is no clean source nearby. The cows and sheep are sick, and they can spread illnesses to people. My little sister has never even eaten an egg. Many people here are afraid of diseases, and some of my relatives died because of them.

I am eight years old. I didn’t do anything wrong. I just wish I had been born in a safer world.
