Crowded Loneliness

The concept of “Crowded Loneliness” was chosen as the Word of the Year 2024 by the Turkish Language Association. What does this concept mean, and why did it appear this year, especially in a time when technology and urbanization are growing fast? Let’s try to find an answer to these questions.

Crowded loneliness is the feeling of loneliness inside, even when a person is surrounded by many people. It is the feeling of emptiness or lack. This happens because of the fast growth of technology and the new ways of life that come with urbanization. People are always in touch through social media, which makes face-to-face interaction less. Also, technology use often continues even when people are together. Instead of meeting, talking, and having fun, people just look at their phones. This causes a feeling of loneliness.

People living in big cities are in the crowd but have trouble connecting with others. As technology increases, the connections people have with each other are often shallow. This makes them feel lonely even when they are with others. Also, more people living in the same place means less personal space for everyone. So, “Crowded Loneliness” describes an important social and psychological problem in modern society. This concept helps us understand how loneliness can exist even in crowds and how it can affect society
