Do Advertisements Influence Us?

Advertisements influence our choices. Advertisements are always a part of our lives.  We can see them everywhere in social media or television etc. Brands try many different ways to attract our attention by using psychological techniques. These advertisements can influence us.

First of all, we should look at how advertisements affect our basic needs. Usually we buy things like food, water, and clothes because we really need these to continue our lives. However, modern advertising changes how we see these necessities. For example, instead of just buying any bread, advertisements persuade us to buy a specific brand by saying it is healthier or more delicious. They use “social proof” to show that everyone is using that product. This makes us feel that we need that specific brand to be part of society. Even for our basic requirements, companies use colourful images and emotional music to make their products look better than others. As a result, our simple needs become more expensive and complicated. We start to believe that we can’t live without brands, even if they are just basic items.

On the other hand, advertisements are more powerful when they focus on our wants. These are things we do not really need such as the smartphone, luxury cars, or expensive watches. Sellers use psychological techniques to create a feeling of missing out. They show us a perfect lifestyle with beautiful people and exciting adventures. When we see these advertisements, we start to believe that buying that product will make our lives perfect too. This is called emotional shopping which means peoples buy luxury goods suddenly because creative advertisements make them feel extremely excited about those unnecessary products. Social media influencers also play a big role here. They show us their luxury lives, and we want to follow them by buying the same things. In conclusion, advertisements stop us from thinking logically. They turn our small desires into big “must-have” items, making us spend more money than we planned. These unnecessary purchases can cause economic complications.

To sum up, advertising is a very powerful tool that changes our shopping habits. It doesn’t matter if we are buying basic food or a luxury phone advertisement always try to influence our decisions by using our emotions. In my opinion, we should be more careful when we see these colourful messages. Before buying something, we can ask ourselves “Do I really need this, or is it just a wish?” By thinking this way, we can protect our money and make better choices for our economies. Even though advertisements are everywhere, we need to think two times before buy something.
