Why do people seem to care a lot about beauty in real life and on social media? Why do people discriminate against others just because they don’t fit their beauty standard, or just because they’re a lot more different?
Well, in the next 3 paragraphs, I will talk about that topic and see whether beauty really matters.
First of all, why do people try to look better or tend to treat people better who fit the beauty standard? This is called the halo effect. This refers to that physically attractive people are superior to others; they are thought to be more trustworthy, honest, and intelligent, and yes, I know that this is cruel, but this is the mindset for most people. People will continue to see attractiveness as a sign of trustworthiness even when it’s clear that they’re not. Sometimes people even end up bullying in real life or on social media. The ones that are affected by it are mostly teenagers and not adults, because sometimes adults are more mature and know that beauty doesn’t really matter. But the bullying causes a lot of people, especially teenagers, to end up unconfident.
One of the examples of the halo effect is modeling. Fashion brands select the models that are suitable for their style and the beauty standard that represents them. They always end up choosing the more attractive models, so the people watching the show will think that the clothes that the model wears will suit them. This affects social status as well. According to some research, some jobs tend to select the more ‘attractive’ one just because they look trustworthy and attractive, according to most people out there.
In conclusion, no matter how attractive you look, you can’t always be the top one. Just because someone fits the beauty standard doesn’t make them trustworthy; it is never like that and would never be like that. If you’re a horrible person, your face won’t change any of your mistakes.
