I woke up in the morning. My mother brought us some old bread she found in the trash and a few leaves for breakfast. It was strange, but the bread and leaves tasted good together. After breakfast, my brother and I were happy because we could share my dad’s old sweater that he also found in the trash. We got dressed and started our long walk to school.
There are no cars where we live, so we walk two hours every day. On the way, we first had to cross a lake with dangerous fish. I helped my brother cross, but when it was my turn, my foot got stuck between rocks covered in moss. I tried to pull it out quickly, but I hurt myself, so I walked with a limp.
After walking a bit more, we reached a big mountain. We took off our shirts and tied them together to help us climb slowly. Luckily, my foot stopped hurting. When we reached the top, we could see the school from far away, and we were so happy. As always, my little brother started running fast because he couldn’t wait to get there. He almost fell off a cliff, but I grabbed him just in time. We climbed down the mountain carefully and continued walking.
Along the road, we saw many strange insects, snakes, and other dangerous animals. Finally, we arrived at school. I hugged my brother, and we went to our classrooms. Today, we had 10 new students, so now there are 72 students in my class. We sit 8 or 9 children at each desk, so it’s a little tight, but still fun.
After class, we found an old, deflated football left in the yard. We used it to play an amazing match. Then it was lunchtime — the best part of the day. Each of us got one slice of bread, and we all dipped it into a big bowl of tomato sauce in the middle. After lunch, we had one more class, and then school was over.
I picked up my brother, and when I turned around, I couldn’t believe my eyes. My father was there! He had come to pick us up with the government tractor. I was so happy that I ran to him and hugged him. I told him everything that happened during the day.
When we got home, I kissed my mother and helped her with chores. Later, we ate dinner, and then my dad gave us a surprise. He took two small pieces of chocolate from his pocket and gave them to us. I was so excited! I hugged him tight. I will make that chocolate last for a whole month by eating only a tiny piece every day.
