Hundred Years of Evaluating DNA-Based Identification

A man was walking all by himself in the middle of the night in a neighborhood. He was in rags and tatters and had neither phone nor a wallet. Who could he even be? No one in that neighborhood had seen or heard of him. After a while, he sat under a streetlight and his face could be seen. It was such a horrendous sight! His dark circles were darker than twilight; the wrinkles on this forehead were more than the curls in his curly hair. And his skin… His skin was pale like tens of thousands of vampires had sucked his blood. The scared neighbors all could think of calling the police.

“Sir, you do not seem alright. Do you know why are you held in this station?” There were no answers. The man didn’t answer any of the questions asked by the police. “Sir may I learn your name, or do you even know the date?” The man suddenly tilted his head upwards and a spark could be seen from his eyes. “What is the date, you must tell me now!” First officer surprisingly said, “It is the twentieth of May, twenty one twenty one” because of this sudden question. “Why can’t we use DNA identification to identify who he is?” said the second officer. “Can’t you see how puzzled off he is, it would put him in a shock, claimed the first officer to his coworker. “Gentlemen, I guess I can tell you my story” said the man to the bickering officers.

“It is a complete shock for me because the last thing that I remember is I was celebrating the New Year in twenty-twenty one. After a celebration I continued to conduct our research just like my colleagues. Our research was about DNA identification, which was an area that had many competitors to finish and present the project to the government. Unfortunately there had been an emergency that quickly elevated into a lockdown. An intruder from another company was here to sabotage our results.

“I don’t know whether it was a curse or a miracle but I was in the DNA test storage room during the lockdown. As temperature decreased step by step, I freeze to the marrows until the temperature reached to zero kelvins. I was left alone with my thoughts and theories. Is having a DNA-based system to control the citizens morally correct or would the government scrutinize its citizens? What if I spoil the tests and they illustrate false results? Is this possible and if it is, then would there be people with no identities in the system, ghosts?

“I was sure that the company would send help to save me even though that never happened. I believe the administrator decided the intruder stole the results and to prevent controversial opinions of people they started a new company.

“As you gentlemen may wonder how this is even possible, I don’t know the answer. To answer your initial question, I am Marc Kellner.”
