Social Media and Young Mental Health

Social media has become an important part of young people’s lives these days. It has a huge impact on their mental health. While it offers opportunities for connection or self-expression it is often connected to negative outcomes like anxiety, depression etc. Therefore, achieving a digital balance is essential and either individuals or society have a role to make this possible.

One of the most harmful effects of social media is the pressure it creates when people compare themselves with other. Young users see pictures and videos of other who seem to be always happy, healthy and start to compare their lives or experiences with others. Also, some social media platforms can be designed for being addictive. People can spend hour on scrolling, sending videos to friends on these platforms. This can cause poor sleep, weak face-to-face interaction or other problems.

On the other hand, social isn’t always bad. It can help young people to make new friends from different culture, express their feelings freely. Some people may feel more confident in social media rather than real life. But these good ways only come if social media is used in a healthy way. For using social media better, young users should try to limit their screen time. They can also follow some webpages that makes them feel happy. It is important to think about how social media makes them feel and to stop using it when it causes stress or sadness.

Otherwise, society has a role too. Schools should teach students about how to use social media safely and healthy. Parents should take the control of their children’s screen time and what they do online. Social media companies have to do more to protect their younger users.

In conclusion, social media can be good or bad, depending on how it is used. If young people, parents or society work together, they can create a healthier and more balanced digital life for everyone.
