Technology – Social Detriment, Harmless Fun, or a Secret Third Thing?

The world is pretty split on whether all this new technology has been a good thing for people’s social lives, especially those who are young and impressionable. Being a writer for the school magazine, I obviously am a beacon of truth and honesty. In light of this, I shall deliver the actual facts regarding the all-new digital age.

Phone bad, book good

When people think of phones, they think of social media. Social media, as the name suggests, helps people connect. Regardless of if these connections really matter to a person, they are sure to help them be more outgoing and sociable elsewhere in life. This is highly valuable in the present day, which makes social media rather beneficial for those who use it correctly. Luckier people may even earn some long term friends.

People also see an abundance fear-mongering in technology and the like. While it is true that social media may lead to loss of intelligence and attention span, I find this to be a fault of the user more than it is of the platform. Moreover, the idea that internet friends are not real friends is total mental illness. Those with reason can tell that strong connections can be formed between two individuals without meeting face to face. Seeing these connections as illegitimate is a diseased mentality, to be frank.

The general logical consensus is that social media will either benefit your social life or not affect it at all. Harm can only be done if you use it very badly.
