THE ENCHANTING VOICE FROM MY CHILDHOOD

One morning, I woke up and, as usual, got ready to go to school. I was just about to open the door when the doorbell rang. When I opened it, I was shocked. A little girl was standing there. She looked exactly like me when I was three years old. She even talked like me.

You may ask what was surprising about that. The real surprise was this: when I asked her name, she said, “Umut Nisa Türkeroğlu.” That is my name.

I quickly let her into the house. I said, “You look just like me when I was little. We even have the same name and surname.”

She looked at me and said, “I am your younger self. I came here to talk to you about everything you have done from the past until now.”

I was so surprised. How could this be? How could my three-year-old self be standing in front of me?

She continued without waiting. “First of all, I am a little happy and a little angry. Do you remember your old school? There was someone who treated you badly. You were afraid to say anything because you thought she would get angry. You stayed silent, and you got sick because of it. Thank you for finally telling our family. But I wish you had not been so afraid. I wish you had spoken earlier.”

I felt emotional. “Yes, I remember,” I said. “I am angry at myself too. I am sorry. If something like that happens again, I will not stay silent.”

She smiled. “That’s what I wanted to hear. Secondly, thank you for working hard in foreign languages, volleyball, and piano. I am proud of you. Thirdly, thank you for leaving your old school and coming to this new school where students are treated equally and can express their feelings freely. And finally, thank you for protecting me and loving me.”

As she said that, she slowly disappeared.

When she was gone, I felt proud of myself. I whispered, “Thank you for reminding me who I am, little Umut Nisa.”
