Oscar Wilde once said, “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” This quote makes me think about how people often hide their true thoughts and feelings. It shows that we are more honest when no one knows who we are.
In daily life, people don’t always say what they really think. They are afraid of being judged, laughed at, or misunderstood. So, they try to act “normal” and say what others want to hear. They wear a kind of invisible mask. This helps them feel safe, but also makes them feel alone or fake inside.
However, when we have a real or symbolic mask like, a secret identity online or acting in a play, we feel free to say what we really think. We feel like no one can hurt us, so we speak the truth. For example, someone may feel too shy to tell their real feelings to a friend, but can write it in a letter or share it anonymously online.
This idea makes me feel both sad and curious at the same time. It is sad that people feel they cannot be honest as themselves. But it is also interesting that a simple “mask” can make someone brave. Research shows that emotional masking can cause stress, anxiety, and even depression over time. People may feel safe, but they also feel lonely because they cannot show their real self. Talking to a trusted friend or a therapist can help people feel more free and accepted. Maybe if the world was more understanding and kind, people wouldn’t need masks to be real and needed.
Oscar Wilde’s quote teaches me that sometimes, people hide not because they want to lie, but because they are scared to be honest to themselves or others. If we want to hear the truth from others, we must create safe spaces where they can speak without fear.
