Sleeping in the adolescent life is considered important in many aspects of life. These aspects include health and performing well in academics. The rate at which the brain and body develop in the teenage life stage cannot be underestimated. Sleeping in the teenage life is thus required in relation to this development. The majority of these students lack sufficient time to sleep due to many reasons. These reasons include schoolwork, homework, and also devoting much time to computers and laptops.
Firstly, sleep plays a key role in learning and memory. While teenagers sleep, their brains process and store the information they learned during the day. Students who sleep well can concentrate better in class, understand lessons more easily, and perform better on exams. In contrast, students who do not get enough sleep often feel tired, lose focus quickly, and have difficulty remembering what they studied. As a result, their academic success may decrease.
Secondly, health is one of the factors that is also mediated by sleeping. For instance, when a person is in the deep level of sleeping, hormones are released by the body to help in the healing process. Furthermore, sleeping boosts the immunities of the body and hence enables students to be healthier without contracting diseases. Students who don’t get enough sleeping time are prone to diseases like head pains, tiredness and gaining or losing weights. These are diseases that can result in life-threatening diseases in the future.
Sleeping is as essential as having a clear mind and emotions. When a teenager does not get enough sleep, it can increase the chances of having stressful, anxious, and irritative emotions. This is because whenever a teenager has difficulty controlling their emotions, in addition to having difficulties in coping with situations in their lives. Sleeping helps in overcoming stressful and mental issues experienced by a teenager in their routine life.
There are various approaches the students can undertake in order to alter their sleep cycles. The first easy approach the students can undertake is by obeying to their sleep times every day. This will enable the body to develop the right sleep habit. The last easy practice the students can make part of their life is by avoiding checking their phones and computers at least 30 minutes before going to bed. This is because the effect of light from the devices can interfere with the right sleep habit.
Furthermore, habits that are helpful in the unwinding process of the sleeping routine would also help in promoting good sleeping habits. Reading before sleeping, listening to music, as well as taking a warm shower, would help relax the body. Moreover, it is important to avoid the consumption of caffeine during the night, hard exercises and loud noises in the sleeping room.
