lush green rain forest.

The Sky Turned Green

One day, instead of blue, the sky started raining green, and everything changed.
At first, people panicked. They ran for cover, shielding themselves from the raindrops. It wasn’t normal rain. It was thick, almost like liquid glass. People couldn’t really acknowledge what they were witnessing as they tried to get a glimpse of the so-called rain as they ran to search for some sort of cover. The streets turned emerald, and the air smelled fresh, like a forest after a storm. It wasn’t so bad however
everyone was puzzled.

I stood outside, letting the rain soak into my skin. It felt warm, almost. Good? Others weren’t so calm. They ran indoors, but by the time the storm ended, the world had already begun to change. This wasn’t some sort of small change; it was gigantic and I could feel that not even one thing was going to stay the same.

by morning, everything was different. Grass had grown taller overnight, reaching my tall knees and that was one of the very things that embezzled me. Trees stretched higher, their trunks thicker, their branches twisting toward the sky. But it was beautiful… Flowers bloomed in every crack of the sidewalk, their colours shifting like they were breathing. The air itself felt heavier, buzzing with something invisible it felt as if the world had grown and got shaped just according to my imagination, I wasn’t feeling sad or anything yet.
But the biggest change was in the people.
At first, it was small. Some had a greenish tint to their skin under certain lights. Others swore they heard rustling leaves when no wind was blowing.
Were they out of their minds? Then, the real changes began. Some woke up with vines curling around their arms, growing from their own bodies. They were quite perplexed and began screaming. Others could make plants move just by looking at them and those people were the ones keeping their calm. And a few just a few heard whispers beneath the ground, voices speaking in a language but you could hardly hear it unless you put all your focus on trying to hear it.

I was one of them.
The morning after the so-called rain, as I was struggling to comprehend what was happening and only observed people, I forgot about myself in all that chaos. When I looked down, I saw my fingertips had leaves growing through them, and I was yellow unlike many, my luscious brown hair had grown even longer and turned to a bright red colour, while these changes were happening it actually didn’t hurt at all, physically I almost felt peace. However the real change and pain I was sensing was mentally, the voices coming from the ground was of those who had suffered unspeakable deaths and I was hearing their misery… It was unbearable.
I stepped outside and saw others like me but only a few were my colour. Some were scared, trying to pull the vines from their skin. Others stared at their hands in wonder as flowers bloomed at their fingertips. Buildings cracked as thick roots pushed through the pavement.
Streetlights flickered, tangled in glowing ivy. It was a quite strange thing to be able to witness it all, was I dreaming? I didn’t even know.

But the world had changed, and so did we.
Some people tried to fight it, clinging to what was left of the old world. But it was too late. The green had already taken over. And there was nothing left to do.
I could feel it inside me, whispering, calling. The earth was waking up. And for the first time, we were part of it. I felt as if the earth decided to get some sort of revenge for all the things that we’ve done to it…
