A person needs to work to survive and continue their life. Working and making an effort means using physical and mental energy to do a job. Labor is important in all areas of life. Because of this, labor should be protected. Protecting labor means stopping exploitation and improving workers’ working and living conditions.
Workers who work hard, get tired, do not eat well, live in poor conditions, and have health problems without access to healthcare should be helped. To protect future generations, we must value labor and workers.
In 1856, for the first time in Melbourne, Australia, stone and construction workers marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to ask for an 8-hour workday. They succeeded. Since then, May 1st has been celebrated every year as Labor Day around the world. May 1st is a symbol of the working class’s fight for a better life.
Work safety, fair wages, time off, and equal treatment are all very important for workers. Countries around the world should make common decisions to protect these rights. Trade unions should have a stronger role. Workers need to be informed and supported. They should get training on their rights and how to protect them. Also, laws should include strong punishments for those who break workers’ rights.
