I believe that the most important thing about a human is their ideas, thoughts and perspectives. They are the things that shape our whole personality. That is the reason why I think they are the things that make us the person we are.
The term “personality” always made me quetsion it. I believe that it is the thing that seperates us from others. What do I mean by that is that personality is the thing that makes a human being special. It is because it is diffrent in everyone. Two human beings can have the same looks, or genetics but non of them can have the same personalities. Personalities don’t just stay with a human for all of their lives, they change. They change when a human gains a major, new perspective. Humans can have those kinds of changes in their personalities when they experience a traumatic event or when they have big changes in their perspectives. So they can change throughout a humans life.
So every change in someones perspective on life directly impacts their personality, right? Not exactly. Perspectives are relatively easier to change than personalities. It is because perspectives can change with very small events unlike personalities which need multiple or major changes to change. That is the reason why I don’t totally agree with the quote “A good book has the power to change the reader’s perspective on life.” . Changing someones perspective on life or any other subject is very easy. It is in the nature of perspectives; they are very changeable. So for me, changing someones perspective on something does not make a book good, or great. I would consider a book “good” if it can directly influences someones personality (which is way harder to change).
I also question the term “good”a lot. Is there an objective good, can something be “good” for every one etc. I don’t believe that you can have an objective good if you don’t base it on some rule. For some people that “rule” can be science or scientific facts, for some people it can be their religion or ideologies etc. Which rule you are going to “belive in” is not the thing that I am going to talk about. What I am trying to say is that you can’t call something “good” if you don’t agree on what that “good” means. That is also one of the reasons I don’t totally agree with the quote “A good book has the power to change the reader’s perspective on life.”. It doesn’t say anything about what it meant by ‘A good book”. Are they calling it good because it is influensive? I don’t think that is the case because not all influensive things are good. So I think that it would be a much better idea to say “An influensive book has the power to affect the readers personality.” instead of the old opinion.
To summarize every point I gave, I disagree with the opinion for two main reasons. A book should not be considered “good” just because it is influensive. It would be much better to say “influensive” instead of “good”. And influencing someones perspectives is not that hard to do, so a books influence should not be measured by its ability to influence the readers perspectives. Instead, it should be measured by its ability to affect the readers personality (which is way harder and important to do so).
