Refugee Crisis: Global Alliances or Local Solutions?

The refugee problem is one of the biggest problems that we have as the world. People are moving from where they live for various reasons, which has always happened throughout history, but we see that currently the system to figure out this problem hasn’t been found in the recent world order. Countries are indecisive between having their policies and creating a global coalition to find a solution. So, how do we find a solution and end this humanitarian crisis going on for decades?

The world has changed a lot indeed. Especially for the last 200 years; the systems, the ideologies, the policies and most importantly, the people have changed a lot. We almost can’t realize this is the same Earth, which we have lived on for millenniums. But, despite all the happening, the world is spinning, just as it was billions of years ago. So, even if we draw the hardest borders between ourselves, global activities will continue and affect us all. One of these global activities has been happening since the formation of life: migration.

Migration isn’t a new concept: it’s a piece of our nature. Homo sapiens have gone through long way since its mainland, Ethiopia. People have always migrated because of countless reasons. Water shortage, famine, war, exile, laws etc. Migration is a global law of nature. But it’s more these times because of global climate change.

But, although it’s like that, the current system isn’t adaptive to these unwritten laws. Extreme levels of nationalism, incorporation between governments, and refugees not adapting to the countries they go, these are making the crisis bigger than it is. Especially incorporation of governments creates a crisis by itself. A country builds a wall on its border, it negatively affects their relationship. A country takes too many refugees from another, and this creates problems for that country. Some governments accept to take refugees when some don’t, and this makes an unequal burden for some. So, governments’ policies of themselves create problems for this global-sized problem.

As a solution, an international alliance should be formed to solve this problem. But this shouldn’t be an alliance which is easy to disrespect, governments should respect the decisions even when they don’t like them. Reasons for making people refugees should be found and solved in the first place, none of the countries should be prioritized, and both the governments and refugees should be ensured of their benefits. This is way more likely than local solutions, not contributing to the bigger picture.

Long story short, migration is a global process which will go on forever, so global alliances can be the only way to find a permanent solution to its problems.
